Visiting U.S. President Barack Obama told Chinese students in Shanghai that the greatest threat to the United States' national security is terrorist networks including the well-known al-Qaeda.
Obama said that al-Qaeda elements have crossed from Afghanistan into Pakistan and is in contact with other extreme organizations. Obama also stressed that the United States government must stabilize that part of the world, trying to reduce the power of extremist networks.
Obama added the groups are small in number but are dangerous because they have no conscience.
Obama said the United States is trying to give civilians greater hope and limit the influence of leaders like Osama bin Laden.
