"Consider the past and you shall know the future", visiting U.S. President Barack Obama cited in his speech in Shanghai Monday.
"Indeed, because of our bilateral cooperation between the United States and China enables both countries to be more prosperous and more secure," said Obama.
"Surely we have known setbacks and challenges over last 30 years, our relationship has not been without disagreement and difficult."
"We have seen what is possible when we built on our mutual interests and engage on the basis of mutual respect," Obama said.
Obama pointed out that "the success of that engagement depends on understanding, on sustaining and open dialogue and learning about one other and from one other."
