Cypriot President Demetris Christofias on Thursday declared relations with China were outstanding and that Cyprus wanted to further strengthen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Christofias was speaking after accepting the credentials of Li Guobang, China's new ambassador to the eastern Mediteranean island state.

"Our two countries share a vision of a peaceful world, free from religious extremism, intolerance, terrorism and secessionist movements which have shattering effects on people's lives," he said.

"As a member of the European Union, Cyprus is ready to contribute towards the development of a multidimensional relationship between China and the EU and help in achieving acceptable accommodation in fields where differences between the two parties may exist," the Cyprus president added.
