British Shadow Foreign Secretary of the opposition Conservative Party William Hague said in Beijing Monday the Party supports closer cooperation between Britain and China.

Hague, who is on a three-day visit to China, made the remarks when meeting with Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo.

Speaking highly of China's progress, Hague said global problems cannot be solved without China's efforts.

The Conservative Party respects China's right of choosing its own road of development, he said.

During the meeting, Dai said all the countries should abandon the cold war mentality and enhance exchanges and cooperation with each other.

Dai said China hopes the Conservative Party would continuously play an active role in boosting Sino-British comprehensive strategic partnership, noting the Party has made great contributions to the two countries' relations.

Li Yuanchao, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) also met with Hague on Monday, exchanging views on party-to-party relations.

Li, head of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, said the CPC values the relations with British political parties, and is ready to enhance exchanges with the Conservative Party to promote the healthy and stable growth of Sino-British comprehensive strategic partnership.

Hague said his party always attaches great importance to the relations with China and with the CPC.

The Conservative Party would make efforts to promote exchanges and cooperation between the two countries in various sectors, Hague said.

Hague arrived here Monday for the visit at the invitation of the CPC.
