East Asia should work together more to solve problems says former Japanese PM

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda Tuesday gave a speech at the opening ceremony of 21st Century Forum, calling for all East Asian countries to improve cooperation to confront the new challenges of the 21st century.

Yasuo Fukuda said energy consumption had risen sharply in East Asia as a result of rapid economic growth in some countries. "We should work together to tackle this (energy consumption) problem."

"Japan and China have already started cooperation in energy saving and new energy research," he said.

Fukuda also voiced concern about aging population problems and suggested East Asia act together to find solutions.

"We should also pursue a new 'happiness index,' to replace the old material-desired 'economic growth doctrine,'" he added.

Initiated by China in 1996, the 21st Century Forum is a platform for world politicians and scholars to discuss global trends and issues of common concern in the 21st century. This year's forum has drawn more than 800 participants from around the world.
