Senior Chinese legislator addresses Baikal forum in Russia

A Chinese delegation led by Jiang Shusheng, vice chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, attended the Sixth International Baikal Economic Forum, which opened Irkutsk Tuesday.

Delivering a speech at the forum on promoting cooperation between China and Russia, Jiang said the outline of regional cooperation between Northeast China and Russia's Far East and Siberia, approved in 2009, had given a new momentum to boosting cooperation between the two regions.

While Russia was pursuing a modernization strategy, Jiang said, China was accelerating the transforming of economic growth patterns, adding that he hoped the two sides could strengthen regional cooperation, create cooperation modes and make full use of their respective advantages.

He said both countries should strive to advance cooperation on major projects and facilitate the cross-border transportation network with a view to endowing the two countries and their peoples with tangible benefits.

Adhering to a win-win strategy, China was taking the path of peaceful development, Jiang said, adding that the global financial crisis and economic downturn had once again demonstrated the interdependency of all countries on each other.

Only by sharing interests, responsibilities and carrying out a win-win strategy, could the world realize common prosperity, he said.

Jiang also exchanged views at the two-day biannual forum with Sergei Mironov, chairman of Russia's Federation Council, and Dmitry Mezentsev, governor of Russia's Irkutsk Region on bilateral ties, parliamentary interactions and regional collaboration.

The Sixth International Baikal Economic Forum, which attracted 1,500 participants from 17 countries, was aimed at seeking ways to accelerate the transition of Russia's Far East and Siberia to enliven economies.
