How far is fast-moving China away from industrialization? And what a stage we are in?
By 2021, China will realize industrialization with its industrialization composite index reaching 100, according to the Blue Paper on Industrialization recently released by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
The index reached 50 in 2005, marking the latter half of the middle stage of China's industrialization process.
In geographical term, by 2005, industrialization level in eastern China reached 78, indicating the former half of late stage; index for northeastern areas stood at 45, indicating the former half of middle state, while indexes for central and western China were 30 and 25 respectively, still at the latter half of early industrialization stage. So from eastern, northeastern to central and western China, the industrialization levels decline, showing a visible regional imbalance.
Judging from the nation's seven major industrial zones, indexes for the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta stood at 85 and 80, both at the latter half of late industrialization stage. They were not only much higher than the national average but also higher than the eastern level. The index for the Bohai Rim was 70, at the former half of late industrialization stage. China on the whole has entered the latter half of middle industrialization stage. It has become a real big nation in terms of industrial economy, but not a strong one viewed from industrial structure. The transformation from being big to strong needs strategic choices in many aspects, the blue paper said.

The industrialization composite index measures a region's industrialization process by five indicators: per capita GDP, output ratio of primary, secondary and tertiary industries, the proportion of manufacture in all commodities, urbanization rate of population, and employment ratio of primary, secondary and tertiary industries. It divides the whole industrialization process into early, middle and late stages.
