Hong Kong's official foreign currency reserve assets rose to 142.2 billion U.S. dollars in October, up 1.3 billion U.S. dollars on September, Hong Kong Monetary Authority said Wednesday.

Including unsettled forward contracts, foreign currency reserve assets stood at 143.7 billion U.S. dollars, up 2.8 billion U.S. dollars, the authority said.

Hong Kong is the world's 9th largest holder of foreign currency reserves based on the latest published figures, after the Chinese mainland, Japan, Russia, Chinese Taipei, India, South Korea, Brazil and Singapore.

According to the figure released by the authority, the total foreign currency reserve assets of 142.2 billion U.S. dollars represent about seven times the currency in circulation or 32 percent of Hong Kong dollar M3.
