Chinese shares prices were sharply lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index falling 2.63 percent.

The key index, which covers both A and B shares listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, tumbled 138.98 points to 5,151.63.

The Shenzhen Component Index that covers the smaller Shenzhen Stock Exchange dropped 441.61 points, or 2.41 percent, to 17,910.39.
