Sales of hatchback sedans have increased rapidly recently, accounting for 19 percent of the domestic market, said Yu Hongjiang, deputy general manager of FAW Mazda on Sunday.
But the figure is much lower as compared with sales in Europe and Japan.
Hatchback sedans are very popular in the foreign market due to advantages such as small size, low energy-consumption, low pollution, driving ease, convenience in parking and low price, said Yu at a conference.
In China, more and more people have come to know the advantages of hatchback sedans in recent years, thanks to the change in consumer perception.
The proportion is close to 40 percent on the main domestic market; while the proportion of economy hatchback sedans amounted to 70 percent. The proportion of middle-class hatchback sedans also climbed to 30 percent.
Yu predicted that middle-class hatchback sedans will maintain an annual 40-plus percent increase in the next five years. The increment is higher as compared to overall sedan sales.
