HK's total goods exports grow 84.6% in 10 years

Hong Kong's total goods exports grew 84.6 percent from 1.456 trillion HK dollars (187 billion U.S. dollars) in 1997 to 2.688 trillion HK dollars (345 billion dollars) last year, according to the April issue of Hong Kong Monthly Digest of Statistics released Monday.

Published by the Census and Statistics Department, the document said the value of Hong Kong's goods imports has grown from 1.615 trillion HK dollars (207 billion dollars) to 2.868 trillion HK dollars (368 billion dollars) in the past decade.

During the period the Chinese mainland and Japan were the two main suppliers of Hong Kong's imports. The value of imports from the mainland grew from 608.4 billion HK dollars (78.14 billion dollars) to 1.33 trillion HK dollars (170.8 billion dollars). In 2007 imports from the Chinese mainland took up 46.4 percent of the value of Hong Kong's imports, compared to the 37.7 percent in 1997.

Meanwhile, the value of imports from Japan rose from 221.6 billion HK dollars (28.46 billion dollars) to 287.3 billion HK dollars (36.9 billion dollars). In 2007 imports from Japan took up10 percent of the value of Hong Kong's imports, compared to 13.7 percent in 1997.
