According to First Financial Daily, by 2010 when the World Expo will be held in Shanghai, five runways will be completed to form an air communication hub. Released by China's Aviation Administration, the State Development and Reform Commission has granted the permission to Hong Qiao Airport for its expansion application, which means the airport is expected to build one more runway and tower and will be positioned as one of the pivot airports in China.
The project report suggests that the capacity expansion is aimed to reach the 2015 standards as expected: passenger volume of 40 million, cargo and mail tonnage of I million, aircraft touch-and-go volume of 300,000. The newly-constructed runway will extend to 3,300 meters, 60 meters in width; and the new tower will cover an area of 364,000 sq meters. The total input of the project is estimated to be 13.928 billion yuan.
Besides, The Layout and Plan of China's Civil Aviation Airports says China will invest 450 billion yuan in the domestic airports expansion. By 2020, the number of China's civil aviation airports will grow up to 244, of which 97 will be newly-built. The five greater areas of airports complex coving China' North, East, Mid-south, South-west and North-west will take shape in time. By People's Daily Online
