The Second 10+3 Media Cooperation Forum kicked off in northern China's port city of Tianjin on May 19.
Beginning at 2:28 a.m. EDT, all participants stood in silence for three minutes in memory of the victims in the 8.0-magnitude earthquake.
The Forum was proposed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao at the 11th ASEAN Plus China, Japan and Republic of Korea (ROK) Summit ("10+3" Summit) held in Singapore in November 2007.
Present at the forum were media leaders from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Viet Nam, Japan, the ROK, China, and a senior official from the ASEAN Secretariat. Jiang Xiaoyu, executive vice president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG); Yi Xiaozhun, vice minister of Commerce; Meng Xiaosi, vice minister of Culture; and Yang Yanyi, deputy director general of the Asia Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered keynote speeches at the forum.
While delivering the opening address, People's Daily President Zhang Yainong said that the massive 8.0 earthquake in Wenchuan County in southwestern China’s Sichuan province on May 12 caused major casualties and property loss. Faced with the sudden major earthquake, Chinese people unite as one and take immediate action for the earthquake rescue and relief work. After the earthquake, media from the 10 ASEAN countries, Japan and the ROK paid extensive attention, expressed deep sympathy and support. Zhang Yainong took this opportunity to express his sincere thanks to these media.
Zhang said that under the common goal of "peace, development and cooperation," the 10 +3 cooperation mechanism maintains a good momentum for development and exuberant vitality; and plays an important role in promoting prosperity and stability in East Asia.
With the deepening understanding, mutual trust, exchange and cooperation between the ASEAN countries and China, Japan and the ROK, the media is given a responsibility, mission and unprecedented opportunity for cooperation. The Beijing Olympic Games is the world's sporting event. It not only belongs to the Chinese people, but also to the people of Asian countries and the world.
Zhang said the Beijing Olympics provides an excellent opportunity for media cooperation and the media are expected to participate actively in reporting. People of all countries, especially Asian neighbors, will share the event through an objective, accurate and comprehensive report.
At the forum, themed as "Win the Olympic Games, Propagandize the Olympic Games,"representatives of the media reached a consensus on the four topics of "Embracing the Beijing Olympic Games and enjoying an Asian grand event,"Deepening mutual beneficial cooperation and building a harmonious East Asia,"Going into the Binhai New Area and experiencing modern Tianjin,"and "Media cooperation: focusing on the Beijing Olympic Game and reporting on the Beijing Olympic Games.
