The Ministry of Railways and the government of Chengdu signed an agreement on May 28 to speed up railway construction in Chengdu. According to the agreement, railway construction from Chengdu to Dujiangyan city will be co-financed by the Ministry of Railways and the People's Government of Chengdu to further speed up construction projects including the new railway station and the freight train lines running in the outskirts.

As the first signed major project for post-disaster reconstruction, the Chengdu-Dujiangyan railway runs from the West Link railway hub in Chengdu, via Pixian County to Dujiangyan City. In accordance with inter-city and urban public transport regulations, passengers can transfer from the railway line to Metro Line 2 in Chengdu.

A government official from Chengdu said that this project will encourage people to rebuild their homes in disaster areas after the Wenchuan earthquake which has caused major losses to traffic infrastructures in Chengdu, Dujiangyan City and Pengzhou City.
