China and the EU have established harmonious cooperation on product safety issues based on mutual respect, learning, and trust, said EU Consumer Commissioner Meglena Kuneva during her June 10th visit to Beijing. Ms. Kuneva and Mr. Li Changjiang, the Minister of AQSIQ (General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine), met the press after a meeting on Tuesday morning.

The "RAPEX-China" application - notifying products of Chinese origin through the RAPEX system (Rapid Alert System for non-food consumer products) - has yielded a good result. China has responded immediately by tracing and punishing producers of dangerous goods. The EU will continue to cooperate with China on market surveillance and will not compromise on safety, Ms. Kuneva added.

Mr. Li Changjiang expressed appreciation for EU efforts to share information and cooperate. "RAPEX-China" has been proven to be scientific and effective for one year. The system has done well to show the quality of goods from both sides.

The safety of toys or childcare articles remains a major concern. Last year, China inspected the performance of 3,540 toy makers individually; and suspended the export qualifications of more than 700 producers. China will continue to make efforts to ensure the safety of consumer goods exported to every country, Mr. Li explained.

According to statements made at the conference, the EU, together with the US, will organize more training courses on the safety requirements for textiles, selected electrical products and toys in China in September. And in November, International Product Safety Week will be held in Brussels where the EU-US-China trilateral summit on product safety will also be covered.

Ms. Kuneva, on behalf of the European Commission and the citizens of member countries, expressed her condolences to victims of the May 12th earthquake in Wenchuan of Southwest China's Sichuan Province. The EU has donated 1 billion RMB in materials and funds to the quake-hit areas.
