The nitrous oxide emission reduction clean development mechanism (CDM) project of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Liaoyang Company recently passed international standards. The first batch of 994,803 tons of carbon indicators were approved for trading.
Liaoyang Petrochemical Company was informed by the Secretariat of the "United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change" that as China Petroleum's first CDM carbon trading project, the Liaoyang Petrochemical nitrous oxide emission reduction CDM project has been the adopted by the "Convention." The CDM Executive Board approves its carbon index and China Petroleum is to complete the first carbon trading.
The clean development mechanism is based on "Kyoto Protocol" emissions reduction mechanisms. Developed countries provide financial and technical help to developing countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. And after the emission reductions capacity is approved by the international certification body, it can be used to offset the binding commitment of developed countries.
Nitrous oxide is one of six kinds of greenhouse gases the "Kyoto Protocol" has clearly defined; and its greenhouse effect is 310 times that of carbon dioxide.
The existing adipic acid production capacity of Liaoyang Petrochemical is 40,000 tons per year; and it produces nitrogen oxide emissions of more than 40,000 tons every year. After emission reduction mechanisms are put into operation, the nitrous oxide will turn into oxygen and nitrogen, equivalent to the reduction of over 10 million tons of carbon dioxide emission, each year accounting for about 1 / 10 of total carbon indicators among China's successfully registered projects on the CDM Executive Board.
