By the year of 2007, the GDP of Tibet has reached 34.2 billion yuan, growing 15.8 times than 1978, the first year of reform and opening up.
Since 1978, the central government of China held four conferences on Tibet's construction and executed a series of policies to promote the rapid development of economy in Tibet. The policies include strengthening opening up and communication, holding Tibet seminar in inland cities, carrying out the "three frees" (free meal, accommodation and tuition) policy among rural pupil and middle school students, developing Tibet's culture and art and free tax of agriculture. In addition, 17 provinces and cities and ministries and 17 central companies took part in the support of Tibet. A series of major projects invested by central government such as Qinghai-Tibet Railway were constructed.
