Macao's inflation rate in September 2008 as measured by the Composite CPI (Consumer Price Index) on an annual basis reached 8.43 percent, which was 0.26 percentage point higher than August, according to the figure released on Tuesday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The figures showed that the Composite CPI for September 2008 rose by 9.07 percent year-on-year to 126.32, of which the price indices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, health, clothing and footwear soared by 16.44 percent, 14.27 percent and 9.11 percent respectively.
The Composite CPI for September 2008 increased by 0.42 percent month-to-month, of which the price indices of education, miscellaneous goods and services, and housing and fuels rose by 2.91 percent, 2.29 percent and 0.99 percent respectively, due to higher charges of tuition fees in the new academic year, as well as rising rentals for housing, according to the DSEC.
Meanwhile, with the seasonal sale of women's clothing, the price index of clothing and footwear recorded a decrease of 1.64 percent month-to-month in September, and the index of transport recorded a drop of 1.28 percent owing to lower prices of gasoline as well as air ticket after the summer holidays.
The Composite CPI reflects the impacts of price changes on the general population. The CPI-A relates to about 49 percent of local households, which have an average monthly expenditure of 3,000 patacas (375 U.S. dollars) to 9,999 patacas (1,250 dollars). The CPI-B relates to about 31 percent of local households, which have an average monthly expenditure of 10,000 patacas (1,260 dollars) to 19,999 patacas (2,500 dollars).
The CPI-A and CPI-B for September 2008 were 128.85 and 125.68 respectively, up by 9.56 percent and 8.89 percent year-on-year, and the average Composite CPI for the period of January to September went up by nine percent over the same period of last year, according to the DSEC. Source:Xinhua
