Shanghai was one of the first regions to use trademarks in China. Its oldest trademark has a history of 289 years.
Shanghai's oldest commercial trademark, according to written records, is "Luxiangyuan Guxiu" (Luxiang Garden Gu Embroidery in English), which was established during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty. This is according to the 2008 Shanghai Trademark Exposition currently being held in the city.
At present, the trademark that is still used in Shanghai with the longest history is "Wuliangcai". The trademark originated in 1719, and is now used by a company engaged in optical products.
Statistics provided by the exhibition's organizer show that, along with vigorous economic developments, the number of registered trademarks in Shanghai has grown at an average rate of 16% annually in recent years.
As of the end of 2007, the total number of Shanghai's effective registered trademarks reached 122,000, including 489 well-known trademarks and 61 famous trademarks in China.
