Hong Kong stocks pared early losses but still weakened 201.26 points, or 1.59 percent, to close at 12,457.94 on Monday as investors remained cautious towards financial institutions despite the U.S. government's rescue plan of Citigroup.

Turnover fell sharply to 35.02 billion HK dollars (4.5 billion U.S. dollars) from Friday's 50.44 billion HK dollars (6.52 billion U.S. dollars).
