The latest generation of internal-combustion locomotives in China, the high-powered AC drive diesel electric locomotive-Harmony 5 (HXN5), rolled off the production line on November 25 at the China South Locomotive & Rolling Stock Corporation (CSR).

The locomotive with the maximum-capacity engine, will gradually become the major diesel locomotive used for freight transportation on trunk railways in China.

With coordination from China's Ministry of Railways, CSR Qishuyan Locomotive and General Electric jointly developed and manufactured the AC drive diesel electric locomotive, currently the highest-powered engine in China.

It marks another milestone for the Chinese railway equipment industry, and also indicates the success of the "import, digestion, assimilation and re-innovation" strategy for technologies.

While actively developing passenger-dedicated railway lines, China will greatly increase the existing rail freight transportation capabilities. And the demand for locomotives for heavy-haul freight transportation will continue to grow steadily.
