China aims to boost the number of new energy vehicles owned to 60,000 by 2012 with the nation's policy support, said an official on Thursday.

Wan Gang, vice chairman of the 11th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and minister of science and technology, said this during the inauguration ceremony for the nation's large-scale application project to promote energy saving and new energy vehicles held in Chongqing on November 27.
Chongqing Municipality will become China's first large city to launch this project.

The nation's large-scale industrialization and application project to promote new energy vehicles will firstly be launched in 10 large cities in the form of small-scale demonstration models. The cities with the better results will be selected.

The project will initially be promoted to public service fields including public transportation, taxies, government/municipal administration, and the postal service. Over 90% will be hybrid vehicles, including hybrid urban buses
