Japan's Mitsubishi Motors will recall 12,985 vehicles imported to China starting Dec. 18 because of problems with the brake lights, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (GAQSIQ) announced here on Tuesday.

The problematic vehicles include 6,090 Grandis produced between Nov. 23, 2006 and Dec. 28, 2008 and 6,895 Outlander EX produced between Nov. 7, 2007 and April 15, 2008.

The report said, the brake lights of the cars may fail to function because of a short circuit in the switch, posing a potential danger to drivers.

GAQSIQ said Mitsubishi vehicle owners could have their cars examined for free at the company's service centers across the country. Repair work will be done free of charge.
