The world's largest potash fertilizer production base is built in Lop Nor, Xinjiang by the State Development and Investment Corporation, China's largest state-owned investment holding company. The project will ease China's severe shortage of potash fertilizer supply and heavy reliance on imports.
The first phase of the project which has an annual capacity of 1.2 million tons was put into operation on Dec.18, 2008. The second phase with an annual capacity of 1.7 million tons has been launched and will be operational in 2012.
The 3 million program will make Lop Nor the largest potash fertilizer production base in the world. The first phase was started in April 2006 with the total investment of more than 4.8 billion yuan.
The State Development and Investment Corporation inaugurated an energy development company in Yili, Xinjiang the same day. The new company will invest 100 billion yuan within 10 years in power generation, coal and coal chemical.
