Macao's Gini coefficient, which measures the inequality of income distribution of households, decreased from 0.45 between September 2002 and September 2003 to 0.37 during the same period of 2007/2008, according to the survey results released on Monday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).
The Household Budget Survey (HBS) is a sampling survey carried out once every five years by the DSEC. The statistical unit included all households residing in 5,720 local living quarters selected by sampling.
In the 2007/2008 period, total monthly income of all households amounted to 4.10 billion patacas (519 million U.S. dollars), up by99.5 percent in nominal terms and 68 percent in real terms compared with the 2002/2003 period, according to the HBS results. The average monthly income per household was 24,528 patacas (3,104.8 dollars), which rose by 60.3 percent in nominal terms and 35 percent in real terms.
The survey results also showed that the proportion of households with an annual average income of 240,000 patacas (30,379.7 dollars) and more increased by 27.6 percentage points over that of 02/03 HBS to account for 50.7 percent of total number of households in Macao.
Meanwhile, the respective share of those with an annual average income of less than 48,000 patacas (6,075.9 dollars) was 4.6 percent, a decrease of 7.6 percentage points from 02/03 HBS, reflecting that "household income was moving towards higher equality of income distribution," the DSEC said.
As for expenditure, local monthly consumption expenditure of all households in Macao totaled 3.08 billion patacas (390 million U.S. dollars), up by 107.6 percent in nominal terms and 74.9 percent in real terms compared with the results of 2002/2003, according to the HBS results.
Average monthly consumption expenditure per household amounted to 18,394 patacas (2,328.4 dollars), an increase of 66.8 percent in nominal terms and 40.5 percent in real terms compared with 11,026 patacas (1,395.7 dollars) registered in 02/03.
