Addressing recent media reports that some pet dogs in Shanghai and Nanjing died from aflatoxicosis after eating Optima dog food imported from Australia, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China (AQSIQ) confirmed after investigation that it has never approved the import of Optima dog food, nor have entry-exit quality inspection and quarantine authorities in China inspected, quarantined or cleared any Optima dog food from Australia.

According to relevant Chinese laws and regulations, domestic importers have to acquire animal and plant quarantine certificates in advance for any pet food to be imported, and the imported pet food has to pass inspection and quality safety examinations administered by quality inspection and quarantine authorities at the ports of entry. Once it is proven qualified after passing inspection and quarantine, it can be cleared for sale in China.
