Shanghai will start work on a major silt treatment facility in 2010, the Shanghai Urban Construction Investment and Development Corp. (Shanghai Chengtou) announced Monday.

The project, which would be the largest silt treatment facility in Asia, will be located in Heqing Township in the Pudong New Area.

Major construction work is due to be completed at the end of this year, according to Shanhai Chengtou, the sponsor of the project.

The facility will cost 680 million yuan (99.56 million U.S. dollars), with a designed daily treatment capacity of 204 tonnes of dehydrated silt. The silt will be removed from 2 million cubic meters of sewage to be treated daily by the neighboring Bailonggang Sewage Treatment Factory.

After treatment, the silt can be used in gardens and landfill.
