Shanghai has become the location for the headquarters or regional centers of more than 670 international businesses, according to reports from the "2009 Shanghai Headquarters Economy Forum," currently being held in Shanghai.

By the end of last year, Shanghai had become home to the regional headquarters and investment arms of 401 well-known multinationals, as well as 270 research centers.

In addition to these multinationals, more than 300 listed companies and 8 large enterprises under the direct control of the Central Government have chosen Shanghai as the location of their headquarters. Over 100 large-size enterprises under the direct control of the Central Government have set up regional headquarters, key production bases or operational centers in Shanghai, and 24 of the "Top 500 Private Enterprises" have set up their headquarters in Shanghai.

The presence of these headquarters and centers provides not only huge vitality for the development of the modern service industry in Shanghai; it forms a platform for technological innovation, and integrated development of advanced manufacturing in the city.
