The first meeting of the Middle East Quartet during Portugal's upcoming EU presidency will probably take place in August, European Union foreign policy chiefJavier Solana said here on Thursday.
"We'll have the first meeting of the Middle East Quartet (Russia, the European Union, the United States and the United Nations) very probably during the Portuguese presidency, and very likely in August," the EU's top diplomat said after talks in Lisbon with Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado.
Earlier this week, the Palestinian National Authority asked Portugal for EU financial support and raised the idea of deployinginternational peacekeepers to the West Bank and Gaza Strip to check escalating violence there.
Asked on the reported Middle East peacekeeping plan, Solana said no concrete proposals had been made, and declined to reveal the EU's position on the issue.
Amado described the current Middle East situation as "complex and difficult", underscoring the region would be "a challenge" forLisbon's six-month EU leadership that begins on Sunday.
