Nepali gov't forms bodies for safe disposal of landmines |

The Nepali government has made provision for constituting a Steering Committee and a National Landmine Technical Committee under the steering committee for the safe disposal of landmines in the country.
According to the National News Agency, RSS Friday's report, as per the provisions made by a meeting of the Council of Ministers on June 21, the Minister for Peace and Reconstruction is the convenor of the Steering Committee and the Secretaries at the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Education and Sports, HomeAffairs and Peace and Reconstruction and one representative of theCommunist Party of Nepal (Maoist)(CPN-M) are its members.
Similarly, there is also the provision of appointing a maximum of three observers in the Steering Committee from the United Nations Mission in Nepal, the donor agencies and the civil society.
Likewise, the National Landmine Technical Committee comprises the Secretary at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction as the National Director and the Joint Secretaries at the Ministries of Defence and Home Affairs, the representatives of the Nepalese Armyand CPN-M as members and the Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Peace and Reconstruction as the Member-Secretary.
The Steering Committee has been mandated with the task of making necessary policy-level arrangements for the management of landmines,resolving any problem that might arise in course of removing the landmine, accepting the standards related to the management of landmines, providing recognition to organizations carrying out works related to removal of landmines, formulating and implementing policy, strategy and programs necessary for production of related human resources and its management and giving necessary directives to the Technical Committee, and carrying out works related to supervision, monitoring and evaluation.
