Arab League (AL) Secretary General Amr Moussa said on Saturday that the Arab bloc is committed to supporting African Union (AU) peacekeepers in the western Sudaneseregion of Darfur.

Moussa made the remarks before he heads for Ghana later in the day to attend the ninth AU summit scheduled for Sunday, Egypt's official MENA news agency reported.

The Arab League will continue to provide the AU with available funds in order to boost the African mission in Darfur, Moussa was quoted as saying.

In addition, Moussa said, he will hand over another contribution to the funding for the African peacekeepers in Darfurto the AU Commission Chairman Alpha Oumar Konare during the meeting.

The AU has agreed to extend the stay of its peacekeeping force in Darfur for a further six months until Dec. 31, 2007.

In mid June, Sudan agreed to accept a revised plan of a UN-AU hybrid force with up to 19,000 peacekeepers to replace a 7,000-member AU force now in Darfur.
