Brazil's Federal Police have carried out 357 major operations and arrested 6,225 people since President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva took office in 2003, local daily Folha reported on Monday.
That meant nearly four people were arrested per day, said the report, noting 945 of these arrested were public servants accused of corruption. However, General Police Director General Paulo Lacerda admitted some serious mistakes, including the arrest of people who had nothing to do with criminal activities.
Many lawyers have criticized the police for not thoroughly checking whether the crimes were committed by those arrested and called for a legal protection to avoid unjust police activities.
