Argentine President Nestor Kirchner has declined to stand for re-election and is instead backing his wife as candidate in the upcoming presidential election, Cabinet Chief Alberto Fernandez said Monday.

Senator Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner's formal launch as candidate will take place in La Plata, the capital of Buenos Airesprovince, on July 19.

Fernandez described Cristina as "a woman of spectacular intelligence, with a great capacity for work and extremely honest."

He said Cristina would be a great president as several of the most important decisions taken by the government were her idea.

President Kirchner, who has 60 percent of voter intentions and 75-percent voter approval, could easily be a candidate for the election, but he has decided that it is a good time to refresh Argentine politics, Fernandez added.

Fernandez said the outgoing president received the nation in a terrible state and leaves it as a nation that is growing.

Argentina is scheduled to hold presidential elections on Oct. 28 and a new president will take office on Dec. 10.
