Egyptian security delegation to visit Gaza to renew dialogue

A senior Egyptian security delegation would visit the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip soon in an effort to restore dialogues between rival Fatah and Hamas movements, well- informed sources said Tuesday.

The sources close to Hamas said that General Burhan Hamad and his security delegation would go to Gaza "as soon as Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak sets up a date for their visit."

The sources quoted Hamad, who is currently in Cairo, as saying that Egypt did not intend to bring international forces into the Gaza Strip.

"Egypt rejects the idea of bringing into Gaza international forces, because those forces are usually brought to separate between enemies, but Egypt and the Palestinians are not," Hamad was quoted as saying.

Hamas spokesman Ayman Taha has welcomed Egypt's call for the renewal of national dialogue between his movement and Fatah.

On June 14, Islamic Hamas movement's armed wing al-Qassam and its security forces defeated Fatah and controlled all security headquarters, including President Mahmoud Abbas' house and compound.

Abbas, in return, decreed that Hamas militia were outlawed, fired the national unity government led by Ismail Haneya and formed a new emergency government.

As a result of the infighting, Palestinian territories were de facto divided into two parts -- the Gaza Strip under the sacked coalition government and the West Bank under the emergency government.
