At least 12 Egyptians were killed and 58 others wounded on Tuesday in a road accident on a highway near the Egyptian Red Sea resort Sharm el-Sheikh, the Egyptian TV reported. The accident took place as two buses collided head-on at a detour and the wounded were sent to Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital, the Egyptian TV quoted local medical sources as saying. Among the wounded, 10 suffer bone fractures in the hips, legs and arms, while the rest are in stable condition suffering only wounds and bruises, the report added. Sharm el-Sheikh, some 500 km southeast of Cairo, is one of the most accessible and developed tourist resort communities on the Sinai peninsula.
Egypt reports about 6,000 deaths and some 35,000 injuries in road accidents every year.
