Erekat calls on Hamas to end coup in Gaza |

Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat on Tuesday called on the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) to end its military coup against the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) in the Gaza Strip.
"Hamas movement must end the phenomena and the results of the military coup its militants had carried out in Gaza, because this coup has damaged the national Palestinian cause," Erekat told a news conference in Ramallah.
On June 14, Hamas seized the Gaza Strip after days of infighting with rival Fatah, which prompted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to dissolve the Hamas-led government and sworn in the emergency replacement under Salam Fayyad.
"Hamas military coup in Gaza had helped Israel to achieve what it failed to do over the past years, mainly settlements expansion and separation walls constructions," said Erekat.
In addition, he accused Hamas leadership of helping Israel "in manifesting an old Israeli plan to isolate Gaza Strip from the rest of the occupied Palestinian territories."
"The concept of resisting the occupation doesn't contradict with having one authority and one law," Erekat underlined. "And also the arms of resistance can never be used in parades and military coups against the legitimate leadership."
Hamas, for his part, had blamed Abbas for implementing an Israeli and American agenda by outlawing all armed militias in the Palestinian territories.
