Military commander of AU-UN hybrid force arrives in Sudan |

The newly appointed Force Commander of the African Union Mission in Sudan (AMIS), Gen. Martin Luther Agwai, has arrived in Khartoum, AMIS spokesman Nouraddin Mazeni announced on Tuesday.
Mazeni told reporters that Agwai is to hold meetings with Sudanese officials in the coming two days before heading for the western Sudanese region of Darfur.
Agwai, who arrived to take the position of the AU peacekeeping force's commander in Darfur, has been slated as the military commander of the UN-AU hybrid force when its deployment is completed in the next several months.
Agwai was appointed as the AMIS Force Commander in Darfur in May,2007 by the AU Commission Chairperson, Alpha Oumar Konare, in consultation with the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in accordance with the decision taken by the AU Peace and Security Council in November last year.
Prior to his appointment as AMIS Force Commander, Agwai was Chief of Defense Staff of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
He has served as Deputy Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) and Deputy Military Adviser in the Department of Peacekeeping Operations at UN Headquarters in New York.
