Armed group kidnaps government official in southern Nepal

An unidentified armed group abducted a civil servant in southern Terai district of Saptari, some 190 km southeast of Kathmandu, Wednesday morning, reported the local website nepalnews.com..

Ashok Kumar Singh, an overseer at the District Development Committee (DDC) of Saptari, was abducted by a group of armed men while he was sleeping at his home in Rajbiraj Municipality-7 at 2:00 a.m. local time Wednesday ( 2115 GMT Tuesday) and taken to an unknown destination, according to police.

Although no group has claimed the responsibility of the abduction as yet, the police suspect Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha(JTMM) (Terai Democratic Liberation Front in English) behind the incident. Different fractions of JTMM has been involved in most of the killings, abduction and similar crimes in southern Terai region of late.

The JTMM factions have been demanding a separate state in south Nepal's Terai region.
