Haneya said his government in the Gaza Strip, which was dissolved by President Mahmoud Abbas on June 14, was serious about imposing security and stability inside the Strip and was looking forward to having stability prevail over the West Bank and elsewhere as well. Shalit was seized on June 25 of 2006 by militants from three Palestinian groups, namely Hamas, the Popular Resistance Committees and the Army of Islam. They abducted the Israeli corporal in a cross border raid on his military base just a few kilometers behind security fence between Israel and Gaza. The three Palestinian groups have been demanding to exchange Shalit for a number of Palestinian prisoners.
