Former Bangladesh State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Mir Mohammad Nasiruddin was sentenced to 13 years in jail Wednesday by a special court in a graft case, private news agency reported. The court, set for trial of corrupt persons, also ordered to confiscate the wealth Nasir amassed illegally and fined Nasir Tk 50 lakh (one U.S. dollar equals 68.8 Tk), in default, to suffer two years more in jail. Nasir, arrested on Feb. 5, was state minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism for more than two years in the immediate past BNP government headed by Khaleda Zia from 2001-2006. The anti-graft court found Nasir guilty on two counts of offence -- concealing information in his wealth statement submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission and amassing wealth worth Tk 28 crore by abusing power.
Nasir was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for amassing wealth illegally and to three years simple imprisonment for concealing facts about the actual volume of assets he made. The current military-backed caretaker government installed in January this year declared a war on corruption to clean up politics before holding general elections before the end of 2008. So far about 150 former ministers, leaders, lawmakers and business leaders have been arrested and trial of them are on the progress. Bangladesh was rated one of the most corrupt countries in the world for five consecutive years by the Germany-based Transparency International (TI).
