Chairman of Israel's opposition party Likud Benjamin Netanyahu decided Wednesday that the party will hold early primary elections at the beginning of September. Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported on its website that Netanyahu decided that the race should start at the beginning of August in order to finish it as soon as possible and allow the party to focus on preparing for possible general elections in the near future. Netanyahu's decision will be brought to the approval of the Likud Central Committee next week. Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has been under pressure to resign after Winograd committee, a government-appointed panel to investigate Israeli leader's flaw in handling last summer's war in Lebanon, released its interim report in April. Israeli media have been predicting that early general elections could not be avoided after the Winograd committee releases its final report later in the year.
According to previous polls, Netanyahu, a former prime minister, is the most promising one to win if general elections were held in the near future.
