UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon hailed on Wednesday the release of BBC correspondent Alan Johnston.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Ban, who is on a visit to Italy, said he is profoundly relieved at the release of the correspondent after his ordeal of 16 weeks in captivity in Gaza.
He paid tribute to Johnston's dignity and resilience in captivity, and acknowledged the work of all parties concerned in securing Johnston's release -- a crucial reminder of the need to protect not only the freedom, but also the security and safety, of the media workers around the world.
The Secretary General also called for the earliest release, without conditions, of those abducted and detained in similar circumstances.
