Official confirms Imam of Pakistani hard-line Lal Masjid arrested
ISLAMABAD, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Imam of hard-line Lal Masjid, Maulana Abdul Aziz, was arrested while trying to escape from the mosque in Pakistani capital on Wednesday evening, officials confirmed.
Chief commissioner of Islamabad has confirmed that Maulana Abdul Aziz, administrator of Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque was caught.
Local TV channels said the mosque's chief was trying to flee along with a group of girl students while covering his body with Burqa, the veiling attire for Islamic women.
Maulana Abdul Aziz was caught by the security men when he refused to cross the scanning gate, and he was shifted to undisclosed location soon after he was taken into custody, TV channels reported.
Nearly 700 religious students so far have surrendered to the authorities since early Wednesday when the government has announced operation against the hard-line personnel in Lal Masjid.
Firing exchange between the hard-line religious students and law enforcers on Tuesday afternoon left at least 10 people killed and some 94 injured, according to officials. Source: Xinhua
