The Sri Lankan government said Wednesday that an effective mechanism has been put in place with more suspects being arrested and a few remaining to be arrested for alleged responsibility on abductions and disappearances of people.
Keheliya Rambukwella, Minister of Foreign Employment and the government's defense spokesman told reporters that as a result of the new measures no abductions have been reported since June 18.
The government and the security forces have been under wide spread criticism for alleged disappearances and abductions of people.
Rambukwella said that stories on alleged abductions had been exaggerated to discredit the government.
He said an ex-Sri Lanka Air Force officer, four serving airmen and four policemen are currently under custody for alleged responsibility.
This was in addition to the four members of the minority Muslim community and six members from the majority Sinhala community who are also under arrest, he said, adding that more arrests are to follow.
Rambukwella added that the police have identified the culprit in the case of abduction and killing of two Sri Lanka Red Cross workers last month.
"The government is keen to investigate and solve all these cases," Rambukwella said, adding that President Mahinda Rajapakse has appointed a special committee to look into the complaints of disappearances, abductions and extra judicial killings of people.
