Ambassadors of European Union (EU) member countries based in Kathmandu are not to attend the birthday function of Nepali king's birthday, the National News Agency RSS reported on Thursday.

A collective decision has been taken not to attend the dinner to be organized on coming Sunday as it is inappropriate to attend the birthday function of the king in the present context, the RSS said.

According to the RSS, local President of the EU and Ambassador of Britain to Nepal, Andrew Hall made this announcement during a press conference held here Wednesday.

He said Wednesday's meeting of ambassadors and representatives of the member countries decided to reject the royal invitation.

Calling on the government and the political parties to create congenial environment for holding the Constituent Assembly elections, the British Ambassador stressed the need for arresting criminal activists by making the police administration strong and effective.

He expressed the commitment that his country would provide whatever assistance it could through the United Nations Mission in Nepal with the objective of helping Nepal's peace process.

Earlier, U.S. Ambassador to Nepal James F. Moriarty announced in a television program that he was not attending the king's birthday function.

A retired official of the diplomatic service was quoted by the RSS as saying that the decision of the ambassadors of the member countries of the EU might be because the Legislature-Parliament and the Interim Constitution of Nepal 2007 have not given importance to the king.

According to him, this is the first time that the diplomatic community has taken such a joint decision.
