Fresh bombings hit Thailand's restive far southern region Thursday morning, wounding three soldiers, media reported.

A bomb blast wounded three soldiers patrolling outside a public health center in Nongjik district, Pattani province Thursday morning, according to Thai News Agency.

Earlier on the day, another roadside bomb went off nearby, but no one was wounded. There were reports of an ambush and a gun battle between security forces and suspected insurgents in the district.

Officials are clearing the roads in the area, where trees were felled and spikes were strewn, a common tactic of suspected insurgents aiming to obstruct the hunting of suspects by security forces.

In nearby province Narathiwat, a bomb was detonated at a market in Sungai Kolok district. The five-kg device exploded at 7 a.m. (0000GMT), destroying several shops but no one was injured.

A police inspection is underway, and mobile phone signals have been cut off in the area to prevent a possible follow-up bombing.

The latest wave of insurgent violence flared in the three southernmost provinces -- Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, in January 2004 when militants raided an army depot and stole weapons. Since then over 2,300 people have been killed in the region as bombings, arsons and shootings have been staged on daily basis.
