Israel began Thursday to transfer four Jordanian prisoners, serving life sentences for killing two Israeli soldiers, back to Jordan to complete their terms, local daily Ha'aretz reported on its website. The report said that three of the men infiltrated Israel from Jordan with weapons in November 1990, and killed an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldier during a firefight with IDF troops. The fourth killed another Israeli soldier in a separate incident. The attacks took place before Israel signed a peace accord with Jordan in 1994, said Ha'aretz. In February, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he had accepted a request from Jordanian King Abdullah II to send the four back to Jordan, where they would serve out their prison sentences. The Israeli High Court of Justice Wednesday rejected an appeal filed by an organization representing families of victims of the attacks to oppose the transfer. The court ruled that the issue touched on the state's external relations, and is therefore for the government's consideration, and not the court's.
