Russia''s Prosecutor General''s Office has rejected Britain''s request for extradition of Andrei Lugovoy, the main suspect in the murder of former Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) officer Alexander Litvinenko, Russian news agencies reported Thursday.
"An official response has been sent to the British Home Office inquiry on extradition of Russian businessman Andrei Lugovoy," Prosecutor General''s Office sources was quoted by the Itar-Tass news agency as saying.
It is said in the official letter of the Russian side that "in accordance with Article 61 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation that rules out a possibility of extradition of Russian citizens to a foreign state and on the basis of Article 6 point one of the European Extradition Convention of 1957 it appears not possible to satisfy the request of the British side to extradite Andrei Lugovoy."
Russian officials had previously told reporters they would not extradite Andrei Lugovoy, but Britain was awaiting an official response.
