Another 70 Romanian citizens appealed to the country's embassy in Tel Aviv and requested to be evacuated from the Gaza Strip to come back to Romania, the Romanian Foreign Ministry (MAE) said Thursday.
"This time requests were also made by the Romanian citizens in the southern part of the Gaza Strip," said Ilie Banica, a spokesman for the ministry.
The Romanians' request for repatriation was a priority for the ministry, he said.
Banica said the government had set up an interdepartmental group to deal with the crisis, adding that the Romanian Embassy in Tel Aviv was permanently in touch with Israeli authorities to schedule possible evacuation and return operations.
"MAE, in close cooperation with the Israeli, Jordanian and Egyptian authorities, will take all the necessary measures for the safe organization of the departure of the Romanian citizens and their family members from the Gaza Strip to Romania," said the spokesman.
He also thanked Israel and Jordan for their help in evacuating 31 Romanian citizens on June 23-24.
At least 11 Palestinians were killed in an Israeli offensive since early Thursday morning, which occurred around two refugee camps in central Gaza.
The Israeli army radio reported that the Gaza operation may end in the evening. But in the northern Gaza Strip town of Beit Hanoun, local residents said the Israeli army was calling in more troops and tanks, expressing fears of an Israeli incursion in the area.
