New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will move his office to downtown Brooklyn temporarily while City Hall is repaired and restored, local media reported on Thursday.
The mayor and 85 working stuff will set up shop at the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) in Brooklyn starting Monday.
Bloomberg said the renovation is long overdue.
"Paint it white and new carpets - somebody's going to kill themselves with all the rips in the carpet that's probably 20 years old," said the mayor.
Electrical improvements in City Hall are also part of the 60-million-dollar renovation project. The work is expected to take two weeks.
The building, which is more than 200 years old, is the oldest City Hall in the United States that is still being used as a municipal headquarters.
Bloomberg said this should be a good test run for the OEM, a new facility opened in December meant to serve as a backup if City Hall is ever evacuated.
